Participles are action verbs with different forms according to time and tense. There are three main types of participles in English grammar
Participles are impersonal verb forms used as adjectives or in compound tenses. Present participle formed by adding -ing to verb infinitive. Past participle formed by adding -ed to regular verbs. Perfect participle combines present participle of have with past participle
Gerund is the "-ing" form of a verb functioning as a noun. Gerunds look identical to present participles but don't form tenses. Gerunds can stand alone or form gerund phrases with objects
Infinitive is a verbal noun without person, number, or mood. There are six types of infinitives, four of which are covered in this text. Present active infinitive comes directly from verb's dictionary entry. Present passive infinitive shows passive action using "to be". Perfect active infinitive indicates past action using "to have"
Linking verbs connect subjects to subject complements indicating their condition or identity. They are always followed by subject complements, typically predicate nominatives or adjectives. Adverbs and prepositional phrases can function as complements with "be" forms
