Gambit is a chess opening where material is sacrificed for positional advantage. Term originated from Italian "gambetto" meaning "to trip someone". First appeared in English in 1656 in Greco's manuscript
Piece values are assigned to each piece for position evaluation. Pawns receive 1 point, knights/bishops 3 points, rooks 5 points, queens 9 points. King's value is undefined as it cannot be captured or traded. Values are based on tactical quiet positions where immediate material gain isn't possible
