Gaius' Institutes were written around 161 AD as a beginners' textbook. The text was discovered in 1816 by Barthold Georg Niebuhr in Verona. The Institutes consists of four books: personae, res, actiones, and civil procedure. The original text contains around 300 pages with critical notes
