ECDIS safety settings adapt to ship's static and dynamic characteristics. There are four main safety settings: contour, shallow, deep, and safety depth. Shallow contour defines minimum depth area below which vessel can get aground. Safety contour shows depths above which vessel can navigate without concern. Safety depth indicates minimum depth for safe navigation
Bridge houses navigation and control facilities using radar and GPS. Monkey Island provides observation deck with communication devices. Rudder controls water flow direction during movement. Navigation bridge contains compass, radar, and GPS systems
Flat structure made of planks, logs, or barrels for water transportation. Inflatable flatbottom craft for floating or drifting. Used as vessel or moored platform
Navigators must maintain active role and manually plot positions. ECDIS can reduce situational awareness compared to paper charts. DeadReckoning mode requires warning message display
Great circle is intersection of sphere with plane through center. Every arc of great circle is geodesic of sphere. Great circle is largest circle on any given sphere. Great circles are concentric with sphere and share same radius
