The Chief of the General Staff is appointed by the Turkish President. The position dates back to the period of the Grand National Assembly. The Chief has OF-9 rank insignia with laurel wreaths. Traditionally held by Turkish Land Forces officers. Current Chief is General Metin Gürak since August 2023

Created in 1866 as four-star rank for Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan. Grant received $15,000 monthly pay and allowance. Only one officer could hold this rank at a time. Sherman changed insignia to two stars in 1872
