    General Overview
    • Tissues are groups of specialized cells working together for specific functions
    • Body contains 200 types of cells that can create all tissues
    • Four main types: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous
    Epithelial Tissue
    • Lines body surfaces and produces mucus for protection
    • Contains free surface and basement membrane
    • Cells exist in three shapes: squamous, cuboidal, and columnar
    • Can be classified by layering: simple, stratified, pseudostratified, transitional
    Connective Tissue
    • Forms framework and supports body tissues
    • Contains cells in extracellular matrix (solid or liquid)
    • Includes fibrous, supportive, and fluid connective tissues
    • Fibrous tissue contains collagen and elastin fibers
    • Supportive tissue includes bone and cartilage
    • Fluid connective tissue contains blood and lymph
    Muscular Tissue
    • Contracts to enable movement
    • Skeletal muscle is voluntary and striated
    • Smooth muscle moves substances through body tubes
    • Cardiac muscle pumps blood involuntarily
    Nervous Tissue
    • Generates and conducts nerve impulses
    • Contains neurons and supporting neuroglia cells
    • Neurons have dendrites, cell body, axon, and myelin sheath
    • Neuroglia outnumber neurons 50 to 1
