Suppression of the Indian Revolt by the English, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, involved a combination of military force, strategic alliances, and post-revolt reforms to reestablish British control. The British used superior weaponry and disciplined troops to quell the uprising, which began as a military mutiny but quickly spread across India.
Strategic alliances with loyal Indian princes and leaders helped divide the rebels and weaken their unity. Post-revolt, the British reduced the number of Indian soldiers in their army and implemented policies to respect local customs, marking the beginning of the British Raj.
