    Haiti tarihi, hem yerli Taíno halklarının binlerce yıllık yaşamını hem de Avrupa sömürgeciliğinin etkilerini kapsayan zengin bir geçmişe sahiptir. Hispaniola Adası’nda, M.Ö. binlerce yıl öncesinden itibaren Taíno toplulukları yaşamış, tarım, balıkçılık ve el sanatları ile kendi kültürel kimliklerini geliştirmiştir. 1492’de Kristof Kolomb’un adaya ulaşmasıyla Avrupa etkisi başlamış ve 16. yüzyılda Fransızlar adanın batı kesiminde koloniler kurmuştur. Bu dönemde köle ticareti yaygınlaşmış ve Afrika’dan getirilen köleler, adanın ekonomik ve kültürel yapısında belirleyici olmuştur.
