Peter III of Russia's death is surrounded by mystery and controversy. He was deposed in a coup led by his wife, Catherine II, in 1762 and subsequently died under unclear circumstances. The official cause was hemorrhoidal colic and apoplexy, but there are reports of assassination.132
After his death, his remains were exhumed and reburied with full honors in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in 1796.14
