Peter III of Russia's death was surrounded by mystery and conspiracy theories. He died in 1762, shortly after being overthrown by his wife Catherine II (the Great) in a palace coup. The official cause was hemorrhoidal colic and a stroke, but this explanation was met with skepticism.
Some sources suggest he was assassinated by Catherine's supporters, although she never punished the perpetrators. His remains were later reburied with full honors, and impostors claiming to be him emerged after his death.1234
