What formats of video files can be played in the browser?

Yandex.Browser can open video files with the following extensions: mp4, flv, swf, avi, webm, mpg, ogv, x-m4v, wmv, m4v.
Restriction. Video files with the mov and quicktime extensions are not supported.

If there are several tabs with video or audio open in your browser, then it will only play the content in the active tab automatically. That way you can avoid unpleasant noise and not overload your system.

View videos in a separate window

You can view videos in a separate browser window. For example, you can simultaneously launch an app and accompanying video instructions. The window containing the video player will be on top of the other windows and you can move it to any other part of the screen. Videos will play even if you collapse the browser window.

Open videos in a separate window

You can create a separate video window using a special button whose location is customizable.

  1. Open online videos.
  2. Hold your cursor towards the top of the video player and click .

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. In the Appearance settings, disable the Allow videos to open in a new window option.

That way video files will not play directly in your browser; they will download to your computer

If the website owner does not allow you to open files in Yandex.Browser, the file will download to your computer. To open it in the browser, drag the file icon over from the upper panel in the browser window or use the Ctrl + O keyboard shortcut and select the file.

Videos don't play back on the site

Try disabling Turbo mode, allowing flash banners and videos or disabling hardware acceleration.

Turn off Turbo mode

The browser might be running in Turbo mode. To turn it off:

  1. Click   → Extensions.
  2. Select the Tools section.
  3. Turn off Turbo.

Check whether the problem persists.

Allow flash banners and videos

The browser might have an extension enabled that blocks Flash banners and videos. To disable the extension:

  1. Click   → Extensions.
  2. Go to the Security section.
  3. Turn off the Block Flash extension.

Disable hardware acceleration

Hardware acceleration speeds up the computer by distributing the processing load between the CPU and the graphics card. Sometimes hardware acceleration can make the computer unstable due to bugs in programs or drivers for the graphics card. In such cases, disable hardware acceleration:

  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. In the lower half of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the System section, deselect the option Use hardware acceleration if possible.
  4. Restart the browser to apply the changes.

Videos on YouTube are slow

Step 1 — update your video card's drivers
  1. Click Start → Dashboard → Device dispatcher.
  2. Expand the Video adapters section. A list of video cards appears.
  3. Right-click on the name of your video card.
  4. In the context menu, select Update drivers.

If there is still a problem with the video, go to the next step.

Step 2 — change your hardware acceleration settings
  1. Click   → Settings.
  2. At the bottom of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the System section, deselect the option Use hardware acceleration if possible.
    • If the Use hardware acceleration if possible option is enabled, disable it.
    • If the Use hardware acceleration if possible option is disabled, enable it.
  4. Restart the browser.

If there is still a problem with the video, contact tech support.

YouTube videos playback half the time

  1. Check to see if the problem occurs in another browser.
    • If the problem occurs in other browsers, then the problem is with YouTube.
    • If the problem only occurs in Yandex.Browser, go to the next step.
  2. Reset your DNS settings:
    • Click the Start button.
    • In the Find programs and files line, enter Run.
    • In the Run window, enter cmd and click OK.
    • Enter the ipconfig /flushdns command.
    • Restart your network connection.

The browser doesn't support NPAPI and Unity

The newest versions of the browser no longer support the NPAPI plugin that was previously embedded in the browser and used for Unity Web Player, since this technology is outdated now. Note that Unity has announced that they are ending support for their plugin.

Install the new secure version of Adobe Flash Player with PPAPI support.

Error “Adobe Flash Player was blocked because it is outdated”

If you see the message “Adobe Flash Player was blocked because it is outdated” to the right of the SmartBox, update Flash Player. To do this:

  1. Open the install page.
  2. Choose your operating system.
  3. Choose the version “FP 23 for Opera and Chromium - PPAPI”.
  4. Follow the installation instructions.
  5. If you have problems installing the player, send a message to the Support service using the Feedback form.
