# Configuring board columns

Add columns to the board to indicate the workflow stages or issue statuses and move cards between them. There are two ways you can set up columns on a board:

* By status: Issues on the board are only placed in the columns corresponding to their statuses. If you move an issue to a different column, the issue status changes.

* Custom: You can add any columns and move issues between them regardless of their status.

For any column type, you can set a limit on the maximum number of issues per column or add notes to columns.

## Setting up columns by status {#status}

By default, a new board contains columns with the following headers: **Open**, **In progress**, and **Closed**. You can delete these columns and add other ones to see relevant statuses and move issues between them.

{% note warning "" %}

If the board includes issues with statuses not linked to any columns, they will not appear on the board. [How to find unused statuses](#unused-status)

### How to add a column {#add-status-cols}

To add a column by status to the issue board:

1. On the board page, click **Add column**.

1. In the **Column statuses** field, specify one or more statuses to be linked to the column.

1. Enter a name for the column.

1. Set the maximum number of issues per column: [How to limit the number of issues in a column](#wip-limit).

1. Click **Add**.

### How to find unused statuses {#unused-status}

To view a list of statuses that aren't used on the board:

1. Click <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="16" height="16" fill="currentColor" aria-hidden="true" class="yc-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 512 512"><path d="M509.5 184.6 458.9 32.8C452.4 13.2 434.1 0 413.4 0H98.6c-20.7 0-39 13.2-45.5 32.8L2.5 184.6c-1.6 4.9-2.5 10-2.5 15.2V464c0 26.5 21.5 48 48 48h416c26.5 0 48-21.5 48-48V199.8c0-5.2-.8-10.3-2.5-15.2zM32 199.8c0-1.7.3-3.4.8-5.1L83.4 42.9C85.6 36.4 91.7 32 98.6 32H240v168H32v-.2zM480 464c0 8.8-7.2 16-16 16H48c-8.8 0-16-7.2-16-16V232h448v232zm0-264H272V32h141.4c6.9 0 13 4.4 15.2 10.9l50.6 151.8c.5 1.6.8 3.3.8 5.1v.2z"/></svg></svg> next to the rightmost column.

## Setting up custom columns {#user-columns}

If you use custom columns, the board always has a column with unsorted issues — the first one on the left. You can create, move, or delete other columns as you wish. In addition, you can create issues inside custom columns and move them both within and across the columns. The issue parameters won't change in this case.

To set up custom columns:

1. On the sidebar, click <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" width="18" height="18" class="g-icon gn-composite-bar-item__icon" fill="currentColor" stroke="none" aria-hidden="true"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" fill="none" viewBox="0 0 16 16"><path fill="currentColor" fill-rule="evenodd" d="M1.75 2a.75.75 0 0 0 0 1.5h12.5a.75.75 0 0 0 0-1.5H1.75ZM5.5 6.5H4a.5.5 0 0 0-.5.5v5.5a.5.5 0 0 0 .5.5h1.5a.5.5 0 0 0 .5-.5V7a.5.5 0 0 0-.5-.5ZM4 5a2 2 0 0 0-2 2v5.5a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h1.5a2 2 0 0 0 2-2V7a2 2 0 0 0-2-2H4Zm8 1.5h-1.5a.5.5 0 0 0-.5.5v2a.5.5 0 0 0 .5.5H12a.5.5 0 0 0 .5-.5V7a.5.5 0 0 0-.5-.5ZM10.5 5a2 2 0 0 0-2 2v2a2 2 0 0 0 2 2H12a2 2 0 0 0 2-2V7a2 2 0 0 0-2-2h-1.5Z" clip-rule="evenodd"/></svg></svg> → **Boards** and select a board.

1. Click **Columns** → **Custom columns** in the top panel of the board.

To add a custom column to the issue board:

1. On the board page, click **Add column**.

1. Name the column.

1. Set the maximum number of issues per column: [How to limit the number of issues in a column](#wip-limit).

1. Click **Add**.

## How to limit the number of issues in a column {#wip-limit}

You can limit the number of issues for any column by setting the WIP (work in progress) limit. The limit helps you monitor the issue flow so that the workload doesn't exceed the team's capacity.

If the number of issues in the column exceeds the limit, you can still add more issues to it, but the column's background will turn yellow. This can help you pinpoint at what stage of the workflow your team is more prone to delays and slowdowns.

1. Hover over a column and click <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="16" height="16" fill="currentColor" aria-hidden="true" class="yc-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 16 16"><path fill-rule="evenodd" d="M14 6.125a1.874 1.874 0 1 1 .001 3.749A1.874 1.874 0 0 1 14 6.125zm-5.906 0a1.874 1.874 0 1 1 0 3.749 1.874 1.874 0 0 1 0-3.749zM2 6.125a1.874 1.874 0 1 1 .001 3.749A1.874 1.874 0 0 1 2 6.125z"/></svg></svg>→ <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="14" height="14" fill="currentColor" aria-hidden="true" class="yc-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 17 16"><path d="M15.361 2.297 13.673.61a2.113 2.113 0 0 0-2.969 0l-9.94 9.877-.75 4.657c-.093.5.345.938.845.844l4.657-.75 9.877-9.94c.812-.812.812-2.156-.032-3Zm-9.095 7.44a.71.71 0 0 0 .5.187.69.69 0 0 0 .469-.188l3.72-3.72.906.907-5.283 5.314v-1.313h-1.5v-1.5H3.765L9.08 4.14l.906.907-3.72 3.72a.662.662 0 0 0 0 .968ZM2.578 14.33l-.907-.907.407-2.281.562-.594h1.313v1.5h1.5v1.313l-.594.562-2.281.407ZM14.424 4.329 12.892 5.86l-2.75-2.75 1.531-1.532a.736.736 0 0 1 1.031 0l1.688 1.688c.313.313.313.782.032 1.063Z"/></svg></svg> **Edit**.

1. Set the maximum number of issues in the column.

1. Click **Save**.

## How to add notes to columns {#add-note}
