# How to track goal progress

The following options are available for working with a goal:

- [Add key results](#key-results) and set up the measurement method for each of them.

- [Change the status of a goal or key result](#status).

- [View the goal change history](https://yandex.com.tr/support/tracker/en/manager/history.md).

## Adding key results {#key-results}

Key results are time-bound quantitative metrics that are used to measure progress toward the goal.

1. Click ![](../_assets/svg/add-icon.svg)</svg> below the goal description under **Key results**.

1. Enter a name for the key result.

1. Set up a progress **Measurement method**:

   {% list tabs %}

   - By value

      You can use this measurement method for quantitative results. The progress bar helps you track your progress on a key result. To display progress, fill in the required values:

      - **At the start**: Starting value from which progress is tracked. For example, when the goal was created, there were two support agents on your team.

      - **Target**: Target value to be reached. For example, you plan to expand your team to 10 support agents.

      - **Now**: Current value. For example, you currently have three new support agents on probation, which brings the current value of this key result to five team members.

         ![](../_assets/kr-value.png =700x){.border-yes}

      To change the values, click the key result.

      Key result progress can be negative if the metric has fallen below the initial value, or, conversely, exceed 100% if the target value is surpassed.

   - In fact

      You can use this method for measuring results that can only take two states: achieved or not achieved.

      You can set the value to **Result achieved** right away or later.

      ![](../_assets/kr-done.png =700x){.border-yes}

   {% endlist %}

1. Specify the person responsible for the key result and its completion deadline.

1. Click **Save**.

## Tracking progress {#progress}

To see how close the team is to achieving a goal, use the **Progress** indicator. The progress value is calculated in percent as the arithmetic mean of progress for subgoals and key results.

![](../_assets/goal-progress.png =600x){.border-yes}

**Calculation example**:

> Suppose you have a goal that contains two key results and two subgoals. Each of these four elements contributes 25% to the overall goal progress: $100 / 4 = 25$
>
> Example of calculating the overall goal progress:
> - One of the key results was fully achieved, adding 25% to the overall goal progress.
> - One of the subgoals is 13% complete, adding 3% to the overall goal progress: $0.13 × 0.25 ≈ 0.03$ (or 3%).
> - The second key result and the second subgoal have not been started, adding 0% to the overall progress.
>
> Summing up these values, we get the overall goal progress of 28%.

## Updating a goal's status {#update}

We recommend keeping the goal status up to date and regularly adding comments on the work progress.

### Changing the status of a goal or key result {#status}

#### Changing the goal status {#goal-status}

To update the goal status:

1. In the right panel, click the **Status** field. This opens the **Update the goal status** window.

1. Select a new status from the list.

   {% cut "Possible statuses" %}

   - **New**: Goal has been created but no work has started on it yet.
   - **As planned**: Goal is relevant, progress is on schedule.
   - **At risk**: There is a risk of missing the deadline or not achieving the goal.
   - **Blocked**: Goal can't be achieved due to certain factors affecting its progress.
   - **Achieved**: All key results have been achieved, the goal is complete.
   - **Partially achieved**: Some key results have been achieved.
   - **Not achieved**: None of the key results have been achieved.
   - **Exceeded**: Goal completed with expected results overachieved.
   - **Cancel**: Goal is no longer valid.

   {% endcut %}

1. Change the deadline if needed.

You can also update the goal status when posting a comment in the **Updates** tab.

#### Changing the key result status {#key-result-status}

To update a key result status:

1. Click the key result whose status you want to change. This opens the key result editing window.

1. In the **Status** field, select a new status from the list.

   Key results use the same statuses as goals.

1. Click **Save**.

### Adding a comment {#comment}

   A new comment with a list of subgoals will appear in the editing area. For each goal, it will specify its status, date, and most recent comment.

   The final comment won't include:
    * Comments added more than a month ago.
