Protect: check downloading files. Applies to all desktops.

Attention! Yandex.Browser is able to protect you from downloading malicious code, but it can't guarantee absolute protection against all modern threats to your computer. For more complete protection, use professional antivirus software in conjunction with Protect.

Downloading files scanned automatically

Files being downloaded may contain malware or programs you just don't want. Malicious software that gets onto your computer can negatively impact its performance and steal, damage, or delete your information. Unwanted programs can do things like display annoying ads, install hidden software, or open third-party pages in your browser. Therefore, the browser scans all archives and executable files downloaded both openly and in the background.

Archived and executable files are checked during the download process. Yandex.Browser distinguishes certain file characteristics and sends them to be checked in the antivirus cloud on Yandex's server. Only the problematic part of the file is transferred to ensure that the security check goes as quickly as possible.

You can't open a file that is being checked. (The file icon on the right side of the SmartBox is semitransparent until the scan finishes.)

The browser blocks dangerous files that contain malware and warns you about suspicious files that install unwanted software.

Blocking dangerous files

If a downloading file contains a malicious program, Yandex.Browser will block it. Infected files are marked with the icon. When you try to open this type of file, you'll see the following dialog window:

The browser keeps files containing malware and adds the infected extension to the file name. The file cannot be launched in this form from the browser or using any other software. This means the infected file can no longer pose a threat, but an antivirus program installed on your computer might still consider it dangerous.

If you didn't immediately delete the infected file, you can do so later from your Downloads folder:

  1. Click  Downloads.
  2. Click Delete under the file.

Suspicious file warning

Files that can install programs without your permission, show annoying ads, or automatically send you to third-party pages in your browser when opened are considered suspicious. The browser denotes these types of files with a icon when they are loading. If you attempt to open this type of file, the following dialog window displays:

We do not recommend opening suspicious files because they may serve you unwanted advertising. If you want to open the file anyway:

  1. Click  Downloads.
  2. Click Open under the file.

Disable protection

Attention! To disable security checks of files and sites, you need to completely disable the protection against malicious software and websites. We do not recommend this.

To disable malware protection

  1. Click  Settings.
  2. In the lower half of the Settings page, click Show advanced settings.
  3. In the Privacy section, disable the Enable protection from malicious websites and software option.
  4. Restart the browser to apply the changes.
