# FAQ about tabs and windows

{% note tip %}

See instructions in [Manage tabs](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/search-and-browse/tabs-actions.md).

{% endnote %}

{% cut "**Tabs freeze**" %} {#stuck}

You can use the task manager to close incorrectly operating tabs and view the Yandex Browser beta version performance statistics. To open the Task Manager, click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Advanced** → **Task Manager**, or use the [keyboard shortcut](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/useful-features/hotkeys.md) **Shift** + **Esc** (Windows) or **⌥** + **⌘** + **Esc** (macOS).

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**Windows and tabs open by themselves**" %} {#self-opening}

If new windows or tabs with empty pages, ads, or suspicious content open by themselves, try the following:

{% cut "Turn off extensions" %}

1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Extensions** and turn off all extensions.

1. Restart Yandex Browser: close it by pressing **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Q** (on Windows and Linux) or **⌘** + **Q** (on macOS), then open it again.

1. [Clear your cache](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/personal-data-protection/cache-memory.md#clearing-cache) so Yandex Browser doesn't load a copy of the page that was saved earlier.

1. If this solves your problem, go through your extensions and turn them back on until you find the one that causes the problem. Restart Yandex Browser every time.

1. Disable this extension. You may want to let the developers know about the problem.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Check your computer using an antivirus" %}

You can scan your computer for viruses using Yandex Rescue Tool. This utility will check your computer for malware and remove any threats. You can also use [free antivirus software](https://yandex.com/support/common/en/security/antiviruses-free.html).

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Clear the cache" %}

<!-- source: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/clear-cache.md -->
1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **History** → **Clear history** or press **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Del** (on Windows).

1. Under **Clear history**, select the time period that you want to delete the cache for.

1. Select the **Cached files** option.

1. Deselect all other options (if you want to clear only the Yandex Browser cache).

1. Click **Clear**.
<!-- endsource: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/clear-cache.md -->

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Clear cookies" %}

<!-- source: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/clear-cookie.md -->
1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **History** → **Clear history** or press **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Del** (on Windows and Linux).

1. Under **Clear history**, select the time period that you want to delete the cookies for.

1. Select **Cookies and other site data and plugins** (deselect all other options if you want to delete only cookies).

1. Click **Clear**.
<!-- endsource: en/_includes/reusables/instrukcii/id-instrukcii/clear-cookie.md -->

{% endcut %}

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**I can't create a new tab**" %} {#new-err}

Close Yandex Browser. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Close Yandex Browser**, or press **Ctrl + Shift + Q** (on Windows).

Try turning off the [hardware accelerator](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_acceleration):

1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings** → **System**.
1. Under **Performance**, deselect **Use hardware acceleration if possible**.
1. Close the Browser with a keyboard shortcut **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Q** (on Windows and Linux) or **⌘** + **Q** (on macOS).
1. Restart the browser to apply these changes.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**Tabs aren't syncing across my devices**" %} {#problem-with-syncing-tabs}

1. In the upper-right corner, click your profile picture ![](../_image/profile-icon.svg) → **My profile in Yandex Browser**.

1. Under **My profile**, click **Manage data**.

1. Make sure that the option **Open tabs and tab groups** is enabled.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**After restarting Yandex Browser, tabs and groups disappeared**" %} {#disappeared-after-restart}

This could happen because:

- The **Restore tabs and groups at startup** option in the **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Settings** → **Interface** → **Tabs and groups** section is disabled.

- An error occurred in Yandex Browser.

To access the missing tabs and groups:

{% list tabs %}

- Using keyboard shortcuts

 If your tabs and groups disappeared:

 1. Press **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **T** (on Windows and Linux) or **⌘** + **T** (on macOS). A new window with the missing tabs appears.

 1. Close the empty window.

 1. Press **Ctrl** + **Shift** + **Q** (on Windows and Linux) or **⌘** + **Q** (on macOS) to shut down frozen browser processes.

 1. Restart Yandex Browser. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Close Yandex Browser**, or press **Ctrl + Shift + Q** (on Windows), then open the browser again. The tabs and groups will be restored.

- From the history

 {% note info %}

 You can restore your tabs only when you restart Yandex Browser for the first time after they disappeared. The tabs will be lost on subsequent restarts.

 {% endnote %}

 If you closed Yandex Browser after the tabs disappeared:

 1. Open Yandex Browser.

 1. Click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **History**.

 1. Click the item with the number of groups and tabs from the previous session.

 ![](../_image/disappear-tabs-3.png){.border-yes}

- From the side panel

 {% note info %}

 If you completely closed Yandex Browser by selecting **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Advanced** → **Close Yandex Browser**, you can't restore the lost tab groups.

 {% endnote %}

 If you closed Yandex Browser after the tabs disappeared:

 1. Open Yandex Browser.

 1. On the [side panel](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/personalization/sidebar.md), click ![](../_image/history-editor.svg), select a window, tab, or tab group, and click **Restore**.

{% endlist %}

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**The browser closes with the last tab**" %} {#closed-with-the-last-tab}

This is normal if two or more Yandex Browser windows are open. Then only the active window is closed. If the single open window closes and the Yandex Browser icon remains in the notification area, right-click the icon and select **Close browser**. Restart Yandex Browser.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**Browser updates tabs all the time**" %} {#update-inactive-tabs}

{% cut "Close tabs and applications" %}

Close unused tabs, especially those running videos or complex web apps.

Close other applications in Yandex Browser's Task Manager:

1. Press **Shift** + **Esc** (Windows) or **⌥** + **⌘** + **Esc** (macOS). Yandex Browser's Task Manager will open. It shows which tabs, extensions, and processes are using the most resources.

1. Select the items consuming the most resources → **End process**.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Update Yandex Browser" %}

Make sure you have the latest browser version installed because updates often include memory optimizations to improve performance.

To find out what version of Yandex Browser you're using, click **![](../_image/settings-icon.svg)** → **Help** → **About Yandex Browser** or enter `browser://help` in the [SmartBox](*smart-link).

If an update is available, install it and restart Yandex Browser.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Turn off extensions" %}

Some [extensions](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/personalization/extension.md) may conflict with browser operations and cause excessive memory usage.

1. If this solves your problem, go through your extensions and turn them back on until you find the one that causes the problem. Restart Yandex Browser every time.

1. Disable this extension. You may want to let the developers know about the problem.

{% endcut %}

{% cut "Disable power saving mode" %}

If you're using a laptop, power saving mode may limit the resources available to Yandex Browser. Check your system power settings and switch to **High performance** mode.

{% endcut %}

{% endcut %}

{% cut "**I can't drag a window**" %} {#not-draggable-tab}

Some [extensions](https://yandex.com.tr/support/browser-beta/en/personalization/extension.md) may cause this issue. Here's how you can check your installed extensions:

1. If this solves your problem, go through your extensions and turn them back on until you find the one that causes the problem. Restart Yandex Browser every time.

1. Disable this extension. You may want to let the developers know about the problem.
