Yandex Weather meteorologists have prepared a seasonal forecast for the autumn for Turkey’s largest cities.

Temperatures in all cities are expected to exceed the climatic norm. The most noticeable anomalies are forecasted for Istanbul and Ankara. However, compared to the record-breaking heat of autumn 2023, the weather will become significantly cooler. For example, the average seasonal temperature will drop by 2°C in Ankara, Izmir, Samsun, and Konya, and by 1.5°C in Istanbul, Antalya, Bursa, Gaziantep, and Diyarbakır. The Black Sea region will cool down the most.

Precipitation levels will return to the climatic norm for most of Turkey’s major cities. However, compared to last year, drier conditions are likely in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Anatolia, as well as along the coasts of the Black, Marmara, and Aegean Seas: in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, and Diyarbakır. November will be especially dry. Among the major cities, the only exception will be the Mediterranean city of Antalya, where more rain is expected.

Fortunately, meteorologists do not predict new temperature records, extreme droughts, or anomalous rainfall.

Ankara, located in the heart of the Anatolian Plateau, will be the coldest major city this autumn. Antalya will be the warmest and rainiest, while Konya will be the driest.

The end of September will pass with almost no precipitation. The Black Sea coast will be cool with partly cloudy skies, with daytime temperatures in Samsun reaching 13-17°C. In Istanbul, Ankara, and Bursa, daytime temperatures will be 15-22°C with clear skies. İn Konya and Izmir, it will be 22-26°C, with no rain. Antalya will also be rain-free and warm, with temperatures ranging from 25-30°C. İn Gaziantep and Diyarbakır, temperatures will reach 30-35°C. For now, Southeastern Anatolia cities remain the hottest major cities in Turkey. However, as autumn progresses, these regions will cool more rapidly due to their more continental location.

In October, the western part of the country will experience noticeable cooling compared to 2023. However, the average temperatures will still exceed long-term climatic norms. The highest average monthly temperatures are forecasted for Antalya (20.8°C), Gaziantep (19.2°C), Izmir (18.9°C), Diyarbakır (18.7°C), and Istanbul (17.8°C). The lowest will be in Ankara (13.5°C), Konya (14.3°C), Bursa (15.3°C), and Samsun (16.2°C). The Marmara and Aegean coasts will receive significantly more rain than last year, marking a return to the long-term average rainfall levels. For example, Istanbul is expected to receive about 78 mm of rain compared to 37 mm last year, Izmir – 69 mm compared to 7 mm, Ankara – 30 mm compared to 7 mm, and Antalya – 96 mm compared to 14 mm. In some provinces of Central Anatolia and Southeastern Turkey, small droughts are possible.

November will be significantly colder for the entire country compared to 2023. The biggest temperature drops will be in Samsun, Izmir, and Ankara. The highest average monthly temperatures are forecasted for Antalya (15.4°C), Izmir (13.6°C), Istanbul (13.3°C), Samsun, and Gaziantep (11.6°C). The lowest temperatures will be in Ankara (6.9°C), Konya (7.8°C), Bursa (10.4°C), and Diyarbakır (10.5°C). November 2024 will also be much drier than last year, particularly affecting the western coastal areas, eastern provinces, and some parts of Central Anatolia. In Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Diyarbakır, and Gaziantep, rainfall is expected to be 2-3 times less compared to 2023.

In December, central and eastern provinces will experience significant cooling compared to last year. The coldest temperatures will be in the more continental cities: Ankara, Konya, Diyarbakır, and Gaziantep. The warmest cities in late autumn will be Antalya, Istanbul, and Izmir. Istanbul, Izmir, and Konya, as well as the Mediterranean region in general, will receive noticeably more rain. Drier conditions are expected in the east, particularly in the Diyarbakır area.
